Kei Kitayama's Innovative Use of Vegetable Crates in Interior Design

Kei Kitayama's design for Hunters' Roots is a masterclass in the fusion of form and function. The interior is filled with abstract forms of timber crates, strategically positioned to create a three-dimensional, sculptural space. These crates serve multiple purposes - from housing light fittings to forming display shelving and cupboards. This innovative use of space not only creates visual interest but also maximizes the functionality of the 30m2 area.

The choice of materials was also a crucial aspect of the design. To suspend the timber crates from the ceiling without the need for substantial steel structures, Kitayama opted for Paulownia timber. Known for its lightness and similar color to the intended timber tone, Paulownia was an ideal choice. This decision not only helped realize the initial design concept but also added to the overall aesthetic appeal of the space.

One of the challenges faced during the design process was maintaining the same ceiling feature throughout the cafe, including the kitchen area. Kitayama overcame this by utilizing the shadow gaps between the suspended timber crates for air circulation. For the kitchen area, a ridge above the ceiling feature and compressible materials within the shadow gaps were used to comply with local food safety regulations.

The result of Kitayama's innovative design approach is a modern, clean aesthetic that is both practical and visually striking. The use of wooden fruit crates in abstract form creates an immersive, cave-like sculptural form. Yet, the design is rooted in simple, straight geometric shapes, resulting in a controlled spatial experience. The design not only maximizes the limited space but also turns practical fixtures into decorative features, contributing to the overall design concept and visual appeal.

Hunters' Roots is a testament to Kitayama's design prowess and innovative thinking. The project, which started in July 2014 in Melbourne and finished in March 2015, was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017. This prestigious accolade recognizes marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that advance art, science, design, and technology.
